Noel Whelan has said that Tyrone Mings and the Aston Villa defence as a whole will be pleased if their club manages to sign Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton before the transfer window closes.

The Villans have so far been the most active Premier League club in the transfer market this summer and have forked out more than £100 million in order to bring 10 new faces to Villa Park.

Dean Smith’s side are seemingly aiming to bring in a new goalkeeper before the transfer window slams shut.

Jed Steer was terrific in the Villa goal towards the end of last season. However, the 26-year-old still lacks experience at the highest level and is untested in the Premier League.

Villa have been linked with a number of new stoppers, including Burnley man Heaton.

“Heaton would be perfect for Villa,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“He knows what the Premier League is all about, is proven at the highest level and showed when he got back in the Burnley side in the second half of last season he is a standout keeper.

“Villa have bought well this summer and spent a lot of money on defenders, attacking players and midfielders, but you can bet Tyrone Mings and the other defenders will be desperate for a proven keeper like Heaton behind them.

“They need someone who is a good talker and communicator giving them instructions and providing them with reassurance. A top keeper is so important. There’s no point buying all these great players, if you don’t have a top number one to stop goals going in.

“Look at the difference Alisson made for Liverpool when he signed.”

At 33-years-old, Heaton has plenty of first-team experience to his name and was considered to be one of the best English keepers prior to the start of the 2017/18 season when he suffered an injury setback.

Had he played that season, he may have been England’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2018 World Cup.

Burnley will likely be willing to offload one of their keepers this summer. They currently have the likes of Heaton, Nick Pope and Joe Hart in their ranks. Offloading one of the trio will allow them to generate funds which they can invest into other areas of their side.

Heaton would provide Steer with solid competition and Villa boss Smith must go all out to secure his signature.
