The former host family of Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld have come out and made a startling claim about his future.
Tom Mechelse and his wife took care of the Belgium international during his time with Ajax Amsterdam earlier in his career, and they have been giving their opinion on his current situation.
Alderweireld has been involved in an ongoing contract dispute with Spurs, and as things stand his deal will run out next summer, with seemingly no positive end in sight to the discussions.
That comes as no surprise to the family who took care of him when he left his native Belgium to begin his career with the Dutch giants Ajax.
They revealed that they had hopes of the defender returning to Holland at some point, and used the ongoing debacle at Tottenham as one of the reasons for that.
“We had Toby Alderweireld in the house for four and a half years, and he doesn’t feel comfortable at Tottenham.” Mechelse is said to have told Veronica Inside, which was relayed by Voetbal Primeur.
“Then I think: maybe he’ll come this way again, because he hasn’t signed a new deal yet, he doesn’t want to sign. His salary will go down at Spurs.
“We are in contact with his parents. I’ve had his mother on the phone.”
Although the Belgian is seemingly happy to let his contract run out, he has still been involved in the Spurs squad by Mauricio Pochettino so far this term.
The centre-back, a lynchpin for club and country, has featured on nine occasions for the Londoners this season, including in Saturday’s victory against Cardiff City at Wembley Stadium.
Tottenham fans will be hoping that arguably their most important defender will still sign a new deal at White Hart Lane, but if his former lodgers are anything to go by, they may not get their wish and the defender could well end up leaving at some point.
