It has been revealed why Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg turned down more money elsewhere to join Spurs after completing his move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
For many Spurs fans, the signing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg represents a good piece of business from the club.
The 25-year-old has arrived from Southampton on a five-year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £15 million with the expectation that he will sit in the centre of a midfield three after being courted by the club for months.
Reports in his native Denmark have described him as a “born leader”, a sentiment echoed by one of his former teammates.
“He is a great leader. If I didn’t know how old he was, I definitely wouldn’t say he is 23 years old,” said goalkeeper Angus Gunn in April 2019.
Now, it has been revealed by Charlie Ecclestone of The Athletic that Spurs weren’t the only club keen on signing the former Southampton man.
In fact, Hojbjerg was a major target for fellow Premier League side Everton as well as Monaco and Ajax.
The report goes on to state that some of the clubs – including Everton – offered Hojbjerg more money but that the midfielder only ever had eyes for Spurs.
The reasons for that decision are said to be numerous. The size of Spurs is the big one, but the ‘outstanding stadium and facilities’ are also a part of it. Hojbjerg has also reportedly been a big admirer of Jose Mourinho for some time and is keen to work with the Portuguese.
It will be music to the ears of Spurs fans. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is an interesting addition for them and the fact that he is so keen on the club can only be a good thing for Jose Mourinho and Tottenham.
