After watching Glasgow Rangers struggle to win so many tight matches this season, I have come to the conclusion that the Ibrox club require another two players during the January transfer period.
They’ve certainly got to strengthen the side if they are to have any chance of competing with Glasgow Celtic for the league title or to go further than the last 32 in Europe this season.
Rangers may have to look at changing from the 4-3-3 approach which is Steven Gerrard’s favoured line-up. Teams have worked out how to stop the Light Blues from scoring goals against them.
The centre back positions seem fine and look pretty solid to me, but they both have to keep on improving their passing skills.
I still see James Tavernier as a right-wing-back instead of a liability at right back, and I am sorry to say that recently Jon Flanagan has proven to be less likely to continue as a right footer playing at left back.Borna Barisic is sadly missed at the moment for the timing of his forward runs and his brilliant crossing skills. He could be missing for another three to five games before his injury clears up 100%.
Rangers need to buy that extra bit of guile in midfield, someone who can supply some killer passes and use his imagination in the middle of the park, because that’s what is missing. Unfortunately, such players cost a lot of money.
Alfredo Morelos has too much to do on his own when he is playing along with two wingers upfront. He needs another top striker to help him against the two or three defenders constantly surrounding the young Colombian striking star.
It is well worth trying a 3-4-1-2 versatile line-up, especially away from home.
If Gerrard changes to playing with three starting centre backs it will eliminate a lot of goals being scored against them, especially during free kicks, crosses and corners. If you stop the opposition from scoring, it only takes Rangers to score one goal to win the game and all three points.
Which two positions are Gerrard’s priority?
How much money will be available to Gerrard for the new clever midfielder required along with one more top class striker to play alongside either Morelos or Kyle Lafferty?
Morelos continues to get booked in almost every Rangers game, and will be suspended soon from the totting up system. How can his impetuous nature be contained?
