Glasgow Rangers overtook their rivals Celtic to move to the top of the league, after they thrashed Hamilton 5-0 at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon, and when the match was over, the focus on social media centred around their key performer on the day.

The Gers spent big in the summer to lay down a challenge to the Bhoys, and after going above them with their latest victory, it would appear we have a real title battle in the Scottish Premiership this term.

Rangers had the advantage of seeing Celtic lose prior to their game kicking off, and knew the reward that awaited them were they able to pick up the victory.

It was unclear just how much the Gers were going to have left in the tank, after suffering late heartache in the 2-1 loss to Young Boys in the Europa League in midweek, but it turned out that they had plenty.

Rangers were set on their way in the seventh minute when Jermain Defoe put them ahead, before Conor Goldson doubled the lead soon after that.

At 2-0 the game was probably won for the Gers at half-time, but that didn’t stop Steve Gerrard’s side having some fun after the break. Borna Barisic scored a third, before their veteran striker rounded off the scoring he started with two more to complete his hat-trick.

It was Defoe who captured plenty of attention from the Rangers fans on social media after the match, on a joyous afternoon for all those involved with the Ibrox outfit.

Plenty of Gers supporters were on Twitter celebrating the fact that they will spend the next two weeks on top of the Scottish Premiership table, and thanking the 36-year-old for the part he played in getting them there.
