West Ham United face an awkward test away to Newport County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening, and they could have a new signing making their debut in the match, according to their official website.
The Hammers were undone by Tottenham Hotspur in the last 16 of this competition last season, but it is one that they should be looking to win now, with their status in the Premier League solidified after a positive campaign last term.
Manuel Pellegrini saw his West Ham side overcome a couple of these potentially tricky looking clashes on their way to that loss to Spurs, and he will be hoping his team do not suffer an early exit in Wales.
The Hammers shouldn’t think it will be easy at Rodney Parade though. Newport saw off Middlesbrough and Leicester City on their own patch in the FA Cup last season, and will be all out for another giant killing on Tuesday evening.
Pellegrini used his squad in the early stages of the tournament a year ago, and he is expected to do likewise here, although with the amount of signings he made in the summer, his fringe players are a lot stronger than they might have been 12 months ago.
One of those additions was Albian Ajeti, and the Switzerland international is likely to make his first start for the Hammers against Newport, in what is likely to be a much changed side to the one which saw off Watford at the weekend.
The likes of Pablo Fornals, Carlos Sanchez and Fabian Balbuena were all on the bench for the beginning of the game at Vicarage Road on Saturday, and all three men could well come into the thinking of the West Ham boss, as he puts together a starting XI capable of taking the Londoners into the next round.
