West Ham United play host to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, and ahead of the contest manager Manuel Pellegrini has given an update on the fitness of a number of his squad members.
The Hammers will be eager to pick up a victory against the struggling Magpies, to end a barren spell without a win for the Londoners, but he could face having to do so without a number of his first-team men.
Injuries are beginning to once again derail a West Ham season, as they have done in campaigns gone by, with the likes of Michail Antonio, Lukasz Fabianski, Winston Reid and Jack Wilshere all potentially missing the clash with Newcastle.
All four men remain on the sidelines, denying the Hammers boss of a number of options to take on Steve Bruce’s charges, although there is light at the end of the tunnel, as Pellegrini explained when he addressed the media.
“Jack is with some small problem. He is not one hundred per cent fit,” the West Ham official website quotes him as saying.
“I think that for him it is a risk to try to come back before he has completely recovered from that.
“[Michail] Antonio and Lukasz Fabianski are also recovering from their injuries. I think Antonio will be ready for after the international break. All our other players are fit for Saturday.”
One man who the match will come too soon for is central defender Reid, although he is progressing nicely and could step up his recovery soon.
“Winston Reid played yesterday night with the Under-23s. He played 65 minutes without any problems,”
“I think that it’s a special way to return. The doctors and he also have experience of those. All last month he’s played and acted in the way the doctor advised.
“We’ll see how he reacts. Next, he’ll aim to play another match for the whole game, and as soon as he can, he’ll start working with the first-team squad.”
