West Ham United have tabled an £18 million bid for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes, according to The Times.
The Hammers are searching for classy playmakers in the centre of the park, to avoid the shortage of numbers they had to mix and match with this season, due to the insane number of injuries they came down with.
Gomes made a name for himself in the Premier League on loan at Everton this term, in a spell which alerted a whole host of clubs to his qualities, with one of them being West Ham.
Manuel Pellegrini is known to like cultured footballers in the heart of his midfield, and the Portugal international would certainty tick that box, should the Hammers boss be able to lure him to the London Stadium.
The 25-year-old featured 29 times for Everton, impressing throughout, but his future is up in the air as there was no agreement in his switch to Goodison Park that gives the Toffees first dibs on him.
Gomes is unlikely to force his way into the Barcelona reckoning, with the Spanish giants still reeling from their shock Champions League loss to Liverpool earlier in the month, which they followed up by losing the Copa del Rey final to Valencia over the weekend.
The La Liga champions forked out £40m for the services of the midfielder when they took him from Valencia in 2016, but are ready to cash in on him with the Portuguese ace never really making the grade at the Nou Camp.
If West Ham are to get their man they are going to have to beat off some pretty hefty competition, not least from Everton, for whom Marco Silva wants his board to pull out all the stops to sign the top quality passer.
Should the Hammers take Gomes to the London Stadium, it would signify a huge statement of intent for how much they mean business next season.
