Cheikou Kouyate has swapped West Ham United for Crystal Palace in a £9.5 million move and Hammers fans have mixed views over his departure.

The 28-year-old central midfielder arrived at Upton Park from Anderlecht in 2014, going on to make 147 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals.

While his early time at the club was marked by a string of impressive performances, he now faces criticism from West Ham fans of being unable to play at a consistently high level.

Kouyate cited the need for a new challenge as one of the reasons for heading to Selhurst Park; Hammers fans largely agree, some claiming he had gone “stale” during his time with them.

Other analysts point out that he would struggle to fit in with the style of play required by new manager Manuel Pellegrini.

As the transfer window moves towards its conclusion, signing Kouyate could be a good move by Palace boss Roy Hodgson.

He will add some steel to his midfield and he joins fellow ex-West Ham man James Tomkins in the Eagles squad.

Kouyate moving to join another London club irked some Hammers supporters, although on the other hand, some were impressed that they were able to command the fee they got for the Senegal international.

West Ham fans can afford not to be too upset about his departure and not just due to a perceived drop in performance over recent seasons.

As Pellegrini has already brought in Jack Wilshere and a host of other players including Andriy Yarmalenko and Felipe Andersen, there is a case for arguing that Kouyate’s departure does not weaken his squad too much.

Nevertheless, some are sad to see him go, lauding his commitment and passion while at the club, even if his performances occasionally fell short of what they wanted to see.
