West Bromwich Albion will go in search of Hull City midfielder Sam Clucas if they fail to lure Gareth Barry to The Hawthorns, according to the Daily Mirror.
Tony Pulis is looking to add some stability to the centre of his midfield before the transfer window closes and has identified the Everton man as his number one target for the position.
Barry, who could be on the fringes at Goodison Park after a significant overhaul of the Toffees squad, is keen to play every week in the latter stages of his career and the West Brom boss is hoping that will attract the England international to The Hawthorns.
The 36-year-old was not involved in Everton’s 1-0 win over Stoke City on Saturday with boss Ronald Koeman claiming that the midfielder was left out due to an ankle injury.
He remains expected to leave Goodison this summer and Pulis is said to be ready to offer the veteran a two-year deal where he would slip into the position vacated by Darren Fletcher.
Barry has made more than 600 appearances in the Premier League for Aston Villa, Manchester City and now Everton and is the number one target for the Baggies but they have a contingency plan should they be unable to get in.
That comes in the form of Clucas ,who impressed in the top flight for Hull City last season and who is said to be keen on a return to the big time.
The midfielder appeared in all but one match in the Premier League last season and scored three goals but his impressive form was not enough to keep the Tigers in the division.
The former Chesterfield man is also on the radar of Burnley boss Sean Dyche so West Brom would face competition in order to get him.
The Baggies began the season with a solid 1-0 win against Bournemouth on Saturday and they are ready to strengthen further with the signing of Barry or Clucas in a bid to build on that excellent start to the campaign.
