Everton announced the news that right-back Jonjoe Kenny will be spending the upcoming season on loan at Bundesliga outfit Schalke on Monday afternoon, and their fans have been reacting to the announcement on social media.
The Toffees defender, currently part of the England squad at the ongoing Under-21 European Championships, will use the move to gain experience in a competitive environment, with a view to becoming a first-team regular at Goodison Park upon his return.
With Seamus Coleman a lock in the right-back position for Everton at the present time, Kenny was always going to find regular game time hard to come by under Marco Silva this term, so a move to get extended action was always likely.
The 22-year-old managed to feature 13 times for the Toffees last season, but never saw game time after a 3-2 defeat away to Newcastle United on March 9.
The Everton academy graduate has previously had loan spells with Oxford United and Wigan Athletic in the past, and now prepares for a make or break move.
The transfer leaves the Toffees with Coleman and Mason Holgate, who is back from his own temporary switch at West Bromwich Albion, to fill the right-back berth in the upcoming season.
Germany is becoming a popular stopping point for English youngsters, with the Everton talent the latest in a stream of players who have used the Bundesliga either to gain experience ahead of a return to their Premier League club, or to ply their trade there permanently.
Jadon Sancho led the way when he left Manchester City for Borussia Dortmund, and since then the likes of Reece Oxford and Reiss Nelson have all had time in the German top flight.
Everton fans were impressed with the move for their youngster, with many of them taking to Twitter after the news was announced, to wish him well for the upcoming campaign and express how good the switch will be for him.
Here are some of their messages:
