Shrewsbury Town manager Sam Ricketts has admitted he would love to see Glasgow Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty back at the Shropshire side next season – but feels a deal is unlikely.
The 22-year-old Gers man was a huge hit for the Football League outfit last season and made 50 appearances, scoring 10 goals and laying on 11 assists.
Ricketts has wished Docherty the best of luck at Rangers and admitted a return to Shrewsbury was potentially ‘beyond’ his side.
“He did really well. I came in halfway through the season and I didn’t really know of Greg before I came in,” he told the Glasgow Evening Times.
“But what he has got is a fantastic attitude in terms of wanting to be a footballer at the highest level and he does everything he can to put himself in the right place to do that. He looks after himself, he does extra work in the gym and he is outside doing extra practice every day.
“That is what I loved about him. On the field, he had an excellent season and to get ten goals and 11 assists is excellent, no matter where you are playing or who you are.
“That is a very good return and I was delighted to work with him on and off the pitch.
“Doc would be of interest to a lot of people and I wish him the best. I hope he goes on and does really well this year.
“If he was available, then obviously we would be keen. But that doesn’t mean that it would happen. I think he could be out of our reach because he performed that well and he could be beyond us now.”
Docherty is a genuine Rangers fan who is desperate to break into Steven Gerrard’s starting XI throughout the new season.
The way to do that is firstly by playing to his top form each week, scoring goals, and laying on goals for others in the team with a plethora of assists.
If Docherty can deliver all of the above, Gerrard simply cannot leave him out of the Rangers team. He should be taking some part in all four pre-season friendlies.
He will also be in the running for a chance to play his part in the hugely important Europa League qualifiers beginning this Tuesday in Gibraltar.
The Shrewsbury fans raved about Docherty’s ability, attitude and energy.
Last summer, Docherty clearly drove down to Shropshire totally determined to show Gerrard that he was wrong to let him go without a longer chance to shine and display his full array of talent.
The Rangers man plays with a refreshing exuberance, and it’s not just his running and his pressing that’s impressive. The midfielder can play, score goals and his all round game is absolutely terrific.
When a player is willing to put that kind of effort in, he will only endear himself to the Ibrox crowd.
While Rangers have a glut of midfield options ahead of the new campaign, Docherty deserves to be in the mix and there is every chance he can be an important man for the Glasgow outfit in 2019-20.
