Watford have made an approach for former Lyon winger Rachid Ghezzal in a bid to bring him to Vicarage Road, according to le10 Sport.

Contract negotiations between the Algerian midfielder and the French outfit broke down, leading to his departure, and now he has been heavily linked with the Hornets on a free transfer.

Marco Silva is keen to bolster his squad ahead of the new Premier League season and Watford have made contact with his representatives, although no formal offer has been made, according to the report.

The 25-year-old is also being linked to Serie A powerhouses AC Milan and Roma.

Watford will have to fend off the Italian giants if they are to land their man, as they will be hoping the lure of the Premier League will help them win the race to land the versatile forward.

Ghezzal managed to score just three times last season for Lyon, and has found the net 11 times in total during his five years at the club.

The Hornets have already brought in six players during the summer window, the biggest name being Tom Cleverley, as they parted with £8million to sign the Everton midfielder.

Their shrewdest bit of business has to be the capture of Nathaniel Chalobah, one of England’s top youngsters, as the defensive midfielder was a bargain at just £5million.

Last season Watford managed to escape the drop by just six points, as they finished one place above the relegation zone.

That led to the sacking of Walter Mazzarri, with Silva taking over the reigns ahead of the coming campaign.

He will be looking for the Hornets to show a huge improvement, as they look to avoid a relegation scrap and push towards the top half of the table.

Their work in the summer transfer window shows their ambition to improve and if Watford can add Ghezzal to their ranks it will strengthen their squad once again.
