Aston Villa have endured a tough start to the season and alarm bells were ringing on Saturday as the Midlands outfit were put to the sword 3-0 away at Cardiff City.

Steve Bruce’s men were never really in the Championship contest and struggled to create anything in the final third against a well-drilled and hard-working opponent.

Given that Villa have ambitions of fighting for a place back in the Premier League this season, the nature of the defeat will be a massive concern for the travelling support.

Bruce fielded a 4-4-2 formation again after using the same system in last weekend’s 1-1 home draw against Hull City.

However, it looks like the Villa manager is still to find his first-choice starting XI and certainly needs to tweak his set-up to get the best from his players.

While not many of the away side covered themselves in any glory, the Midlands fan base was quick to single out midfielder Josh Onomah for praise.

The young wideman is on loan at the Championship club from Tottenham Hotspur and penned a new deal with the North London side before moving to Villa Park.

Onomah looked to get on the ball in the loss to Cardiff but lacked support and assistance when he found himself in space against the Bluebirds.

Bruce has a lot of work to do to get Villa back on track and a midweek clash against one of last season’s strongest teams, Reading, will be another firm test of the club’s promotion credentials.

Onomah has had opportunities to play at Tottenham and is clearly highly regarded at the Premier League club, with the 20-year-old seemingly set to be an important player for Bruce’s men.

With Jack Grealish injured currently, Bruce possibly needs to find a system that can help the Tottenham starlet thrive and make the young attacker the focal point of the team’s efforts in the final third.

The Villa fans were clearly disappointed by their team’s abject display but made a special effort to mention the Spurs loanee’s enterprise and technique on the ball on Twitter.
