Former Leeds United player Noel Whelan has tipped Marcelo Bielsa to keep faith with the team that won in midweek and have Kemar Roofe on the sidelines against Sheffield Wednesday.
The Whites are pushing for promotion to the Premier League and know that their Championship destiny is in their own hands ahead of the clash with the Owls at Elland Road on Saturday.
Leeds got back to winning ways in midweek with a 2-0 victory over Preston North End, with striker Patrick Bamford getting both of the goals.
The former Chelsea attacker has struggled with injuries since moving to Elland Road in the summer and some of the club’s fans have questioned his contribution to the team’s efforts.
However, seven goals in 2019 have shown the Leeds faithful that Bamford can have an important role to play in the club’s promotion push.
Roofe was the main man in attack earlier this season but injury has seen him fall down Bielsa’s preferences – with Whelan believing that the star will miss out on the starting XI against Wednesday.
“Bielsa won’t change the side,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“It’s not about rotation with him. He only makes alterations if they’re enforced by injury or suspension. He keeps faith with his beliefs, methods and the players who respond to him.
“That’s unfortunate for Roofe, who has been fantastic this season. But he still has a big part to play. He has been a massive figure this season and there will be a time when he will be needed to change the game.
“He needs to be ready to be the superstar and the hero.”
Leeds know that if they can win their remaining games they will be a Premier League club, with the Whites sitting in second place in the Championship standings ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.
