According to reports from Turkish media outlet Fanatik, Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is still ‘determined’ to land Martin Skrtel, his former Liverpool teammate.
Signing the veteran Slovakian was reportedly one of the Gers’ top priorities when he arrived at Ibrox, and now he is seemingly renewing his efforts for the quality experienced, robust centre back.
Skrtel’s contract with Turkish side Fenerbahce will run out in the summer, and Rangers are still obviously keen to snap him up.
Gerrard certainly knows exactly what the centre-half would bring to the Scottish side, especially if he could get him to arrive this January.
Having played with him at Liverpool, he must think that getting him could be the difference between winning the league or not. But do Rangers have the extra money to secure him?
If he does sign, Rangers could realistically become the hot favourites to win the title.
The experience and steel of Skrtel teaming up with Connor Goldson, would inevitably give Rangers a far superior defence.
Having Steven Davis to add more quality and experience to ex-Burnley’s Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack in midfield, will make Rangers a far better team than they were when Gerrard arrived.
When you have talented Ryan Kent supplying Jermain Defoe and top scorer Alfredo Morelos, it is exciting times ahead for the fans.
Skrtel spent nine very successful years at the Anfield club, and Gerrard wants him to bolster his defence, to make winning games easier.
It is not a done deal, as the report claims that Rangers will have to be very patient for the 103-cap international, as Skrtel probably won’t want to make any immediate decisions.
Skrtel would be a fabulous addition to the Rangers squad, but Gerrard may have to wait until June, to secure him on a free transfer deal.
