Tottenham Hotspur made an approach to sign Joel Astro over the course of the summer, the Swansea City player claims.
The Sweden under-21 international is highly rated and moved to the Liberty Stadium from Sunderland after the Black Cats were relegated to League One.
Tottenham on the other hand went through the entire summer window without signing any new players, with Mauricio Pochettino keeping the same squad from the prior campaign.
Spurs have issues in attack as there is the lack of a proven option to back up Harry Kane, with the jury out on Fernando Llorente.
Asoro is a rising star and would surely have been sent to Tottenham’s under-23s side rather than being a fixture in the first-team squad – something the player says he was not willing to accept.
“We sat talking to Tottenham and they said they could not promise anything about playing time,” he told Swedish newspaper Afton Bladet.
“Then I felt I could not make that choice.
“It does not hurt to have higher pay, but I thought more about playing. If I want to compete seriously while playing with the U-21 national team, I need to play in my club team as well.”
