Tottenham Hotspur head to Germany for the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening, and they hope to be able to call upon a midfield pair as they look to protect their first leg lead.
Spurs put more than one foot into the quarter finals of the elite European competition, when they overcame the Bundesliga leaders 3-0 on what was a special night at Wembley Stadium three weeks ago.
Things have not gone to plan for Tottenham since that match however, as they have seen their Premier League title hopes go up in smoke after three successive outings without a win.
That means if Mauricio Pochettino is to end Spurs’ lengthy run without a major trophy this season, the Champions League is the only option left available to him, so it is imperative that they protect the advantage they build up in that first leg.
To assist them with that, the Tottenham boss will hopefully be able to select Harry Winks and Eric Dier in their team for the contest in Dortmund.
The midfield duo have been out recently, and were both unavailable for the north London derby draw with Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.
Winks missed that match with a hip issue but he has recovered from that, while Dier has been absent for the past five matches due to a bout of Tonsillitis.
While both have made the trip to Germany, they will need to be assessed ahead of the clash, as the Tottenham boss confirmed when he addressed the media prior to the contest.
“They are with the squad but we need to assess them this afternoon and tomorrow to see if they are in contention. We will see.” the Spurs official website quotes him as saying.
The match will come too soon for Dele Alli, although it is thought that he could return at the weekend. Kieran Trippier will also miss out as he has remained in London.
