Tottenham Hotspur’s Jan Vertonghen took to social media on Wednesday, uploading a photo to Instagram showing his return to first-team training.

The Belgian has been out of action for the past month, after injuring his ankle ligaments during Spurs’ 4-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion in mid-January and was originally expected to spend up to two months on the sidelines.

In his absence, Spurs have been victorious in just one of their previous four Premier League matches and have dropped to third place in the Premier League, where they sit 10 points behind runaway leaders Chelsea.

Vertonghen’s imminent return to the side will provide a timely boost for manager Mauricio Pochettino, whose side has appeared to miss the centre-back’s assured performances and leadership skills.

Great to be back on the training field ⚽️

The former Southampton boss was left frustrated at his side’s performance in their recent 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, saying that on the basis of their performance at Anfield, Spurs were not ready to win the Premier League title.

A strong Spurs side were beaten unexpectedly on Thursday night by Gent in the Europa League, with an FA Cup clash against Fulham to play at the weekend.
