Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has emerged as a shock summer transfer target for Manchester United, according to The Sun.

The Englishman has made 37 appearances for Spurs so far this season, including five games in the Champions League.

He was originally deployed as a defensive midfielder last season, however, manager Mauricio Pochettino has pushed him back to defence this campaign because of injuries to Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

Dier is said to be valued at over £40 million and is currently on a five-year contract that will keep him at White Hart Lane until 2021.

The 23-year-old is reportedly seen by Jose Mourinho as a replacement for Michael Carrick as the Portuguese boss looks to overhaul the Red Devils’ squad this summer.

He made his debut for England’s senior side in November 2015 after opting not to play for Portugal; he was eligible for both having started his career with Primeira Liga side Sporting Lisbon.

With Dier still considered an important part of Tottenham’s squad, it looks like United will have to pay well over the odds if they want to bring him to Old Trafford this summer.
