Tottenham Hotspur have registered their interest in signing Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax this summer but face a battle to sign him ahead of Barcelona, according to Football Insider.
The 19-year-old Netherlands international has become a sensation of world football, leading the Amsterdam side to the Champions League semi-finals – where they will face Spurs.
Tottenham have not signed anyone in the last two transfer windows and will surely need to reinforce this summer if they are to challenge for major silverware again in 2019-20.
Spurs are well-stocked at centre-half but with uncertainty over Toby Alderweireld’s future, Mauricio Pochettino could look to land another player in this position.
Tottenham have a track record of signing players from Ajax, with Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen all moving to North London from the Dutch club.
The Spurs fans would be delighted to see De Ligt land at the club, but in reality Pochettino’s side face a big battle to sign the 19-year-old.
The young defender looks set to be a star of the world game and as such, major European clubs will surely battle over his signature this summer.
There will also be the financial issue of meeting Ajax’s asking price, while other big teams will offer higher wages than Tottenham.
Pochettino and the Spurs scouting network will get a close look at De Ligt later this month, with 180 minutes to decide whether it is the Premier League side or Eredivisie outfit that plays in the Champions League final.
