Football pundit Graeme Souness has described the current Tottenham Hotspur team as the best Spurs side he has ever seen, but warned them they will need to be busy during the summer transfer window.
The North London side have gone from strength-to-strength under Mauricio Pochettino’s guidance, chasing eventual champions Chelsea to a hard-fought battle for the Premier League title.
However, despite the impressive campaign for the last-ever season at White Hart Lane, the Scottish pundit has said that Tottenham will need to bring in the right players for next year’s race.
“The board shouldn’t listen to people like us saying what a fabulous team they’ve got,” he told Sky Sports.
“They should be saying ‘we are going to have to go out and strengthen next year’ – because it’s guaranteed Chelsea will, the team that finished above them.
“They’ve got to go out and spend big money again. Prove to the fans they are the real deal and are going to have a right go.”
Souness warned that the North London side could not afford to sit back and wait to become champions with the current team, but needed to add to the squad to take them the extra-mile.
“You don’t sit back and wait for this team to become champions because that might not happen. Some of them might not get any better,” he said.
“You’ve got to add to the squad and have a right go because they are that near. They are not very far away.”
Tottenham, who are set to move to Wembley Stadium next season to play their home matches in the Premier League and Champions League, will also need to keep hold of key players, such as Harry Kane and Dele Alli.
The two England internationals have been in sensational form this year, scoring 39 goals between them in the nation’s top-flight.
