Ex-Tottenham Hotspur defender Graham Roberts has taken to Twitter to state that his former club should take a gamble on Everton playmaker Ross Barkley.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino guided the North London club to a second-placed Premier League finish last season and will be out to strengthen his squad this summer.

Roberts believes that a move for Everton star Barkley would be a perfect start towards helping Tottenham win silverware in 2017-18.

After being pushed for information by Spurs fans on Twitter, Roberts issued this response.

Barkley first burst into the Everton first team as a prodigious and vibrant 20-year-old in the 2013-14 Premier League season, earning his first England cap in September 2013 and making the World Cup squad nine months later.

However, his recent progress has stalled. Often marred by injury and with just one year left on his current contract at Goodison Park, Everton may feel that the time is right to cash in given the 23-year-old has spurned an extension.

Quite where the powerful attacking midfielder would fit in at Tottenham remains to be seen.

With Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen ending the season in sparkling form and with Pochettino recently confirming the future of a returning Erik Lamela, Barkley may need to wait for his opportunity in his preferred attacking midfield berth.

Despite reportedly turning down a new £100,000 per week contract, the young Evertonian may find it difficult to leave behind his boyhood club. This could be a saga that rumbles on for some time.
