Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign West Bromwich Albion starlet Rekeem Harper, according to a report published by The Sun on Sunday (March 3, page 68).
Harper is viewed as a talented young prospect and has managed to make 10 Championship appearances this season.
The report added that all of the top six clubs in the Premier League are interested in the youngster but that it is Tottenham who lead the race to sign him.
Harper’s current contract with West Brom is due to expire at the end of the season and he could move on for a compensation fee.
The report also adds that the Baggies want the player to remain with them beyond the end of this season though Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is confident that he can integrate him well into his first-team.
Harper faces a difficult decision. He is on the verge of becoming a first-team regular with Darren Moore’s side and at this stage, he needs to start playing regularly for the sake of his development. The Hawthorns looks like it is a great environment for him to hone his skills.
At the same time, he may have the opportunity to join Tottenham, who are one of the best teams in England.
While many big clubs do not have a good reputation in terms of how they work with young talent, Spurs are the exception. Pochettino is a manager who is known to be one of the best in terms of working well with Tottenham youth players.
Whether Harper stays or remains with the Baggies could ultimately depend upon whether the club gets promoted to the Premier League.
