Tottenham won through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup by beating London rivals West Ham United 3-1 at the London Stadium last night and central defender Juan Foyth earned plenty of praise from those watching.
A brace of goals from Son Heung-min either side of half-time gave Spurs a cushion before Lucas Perez’s goal got the Hammers back in contention.
However, just four minutes later Fernando Llorente restored Tottenham’s two-goal advantage with his first goal since March and that was enough to clinch victory.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side can now look forward to a quarter-final meeting with rivals Arsenal after coming out on top of what was a relatively evenly matched encounter.
In fact, West Ham had more shots in total and won more corners; both sides had 50% of possession but it was Tottenham who made their chances count.
One of the main reasons the Hammers failed to score more than once was the performance of centre-back Foyth.
The Argentine was selected to make his first appearance of the season with Pochettino opting to rest several players after Monday’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester City.
In partnership with Davinson Sanchez at the back, he was assured and put in what was arguably his best performance in a Tottenham shirt to date.
Backed up by an impressive display by his compatriot Paolo Gazzaniga, the defence held firm which must have pleased Pochettino as much as it did the Spurs fans.
Several supporters praised his performance at the back, some going as far to claim they think he is ready to start on Saturday when Tottenham take on Wolves.
Others don’t go quite as far, even suggesting that he might be best served by going out on loan to get more game-time before he can push for a first-team place.
Here is a selection of tweets from Spurs fans, most of whom were delighted with the performance of the 20-year-old, who arrived at the club last summer.

Foyth showed last night why Poch bought him and why he rates him so highly believing he will develop into a top-class centre-back. How long will that take determines contract length for the older guys. Verts could be the Daddy to our crop. #thfc #coys

I'm a convert. Either he's bulked out, or he's proved it doesn't matter.

Just see someone say Foyth as a future possible CDM. With the poor options we have maybe we could try that. Likes to get forward as you can see last night & from his time in Argentina

Putting in out there – start Foyth over Sanchez vs Wolves? What does everyone else think? #COYS

Foyth looks very good but raw. Should have gone out on loan last season to gain experience. The kid deserves game time and I hope he gets some
