Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind to beat Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup on Tuesday evening, and after the match fans reacted to the performance of their reliable utility man.
Wolves were made to produce a fine comeback in the original tie at the League One outfit, coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2, and they once again had to ride adversity before claiming their place against Bristol City in the fifth round of the famous competition.
Matt Doherty was the hero in Shrewsbury, levelling in injury time to force a replay, and it was him who had a major impact on Wanderers qualifying for the last 16 of the tournament.
The Republic of Ireland international opened the scoring after just two minutes, and all looked good for Wolves, with many of the huge crowd expecting their side to go on and dominate.
Shrewsbury had other ideas however, and forced their way into the lead towards the end of the first half, before Doherty added his second deep into injury time in the opening period.
Wolves got their winner shortly after the break when Ivan Cavellero put them 3-2 up, and the Premier League outfit saw out the remaining 30 minutes to avoid being the victims of the latest upset in the competition.
Doherty is in the middle of a fantastic season. He is key to the way Wolverhampton play under Nuno Espirito Santo and has made the elevation to the Premier League with ease.
He has popped up with some important goals this term, and contributed to a few others, and is becoming a valuable part of the Wolves squad.
Wolverhampton fans reacted to his latest performance on social media after the final whistle at Molineux, with many highlighting how impressive he was against the Shrews, and how good he has been throughout the season to date.
Here are some of their messages:
Btw that's SIX goals this season for Matt Doherty in all competitions. Doesn't half play that position well. Only Raul Jimenez with 11 (9 PL + 2 FAC) has scored more goals for Wolves this season. #WWFC

Just got back in stoke, not our best performance tonight but we did enough. Traore was much better playing out wide running at people and Doherty top class again. Surely Costa is running out of chances now? onto Bristol in next round #wwfc

Despicable when a caveman like Martin o Neill said matt doherty had to improve nearer the final third, Doherty is some footballer, what a performance tonight.#wwfc

Through to the next round. Feel relieved. A classic FA Cup tie with a bit of everything. Doherty, Saiss and Traore the stand outs. As talented as MGW is, he's not a defensive midfielder & shouldn't be used there.
In regards to Ruddy. I'm not ready to talk about that yet. #wwfc

Job done. We did it the hard way but this club doesn’t know any other way of doing things. What an incredible season Doherty continues to have. And what’s happened to Costa? But tonight is about the team and the dream is still alive. #WWFC

Doherty, Doherty give me the news, I got a bad case of beating the Shrews. #wwfc 🐺

Got there in the end. Doherty saved our bacon tonight, getting away with a poor first half. Traore was MOTM for me. He battled, had them on toast and was a constant threat. Less said about Costa the better, don’t know what’s gone wrong there. #WWFC
