Players who ask not to be considered by Scotland manager Alex McLeish may never be picked to play for the national team again, according to ex-Glasgow Celtic’s Peter Grant who is now employed as assistant manager.
Glasgow Rangers midfield general Ryan Jack, Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie, Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths and West Ham forward Robert Snodgrass, have all pulled out of the squad, by being less than 100% fit.
The important qualifying games against Albania and Israel, in the Nations League double-header, are unfortunately bound to suffer when so many players have pulled out for various reasons – genuine or not.
And Grant admitted,
“If you don’t want to play through injuries, that’s completely different. But if it’s down to the fact that you don’t want to play, I don’t think you will be back in the squad”.
Ryan Jack has been sent back to Rangers by national team medical staff due to a knee knock he received against a sturdy-over-aggressive bullying Motherwell side in last Sunday’s 7-1 victory at Ibrox.
Jack will be disappointed to lose out on these special international games, as he was just getting over his last injury when this latest set back flared up.
Rangers 26-year-old defensive midfield maestro will be sorely missed in both of these matches, especially when you see how average/rotten this new Scotland team actually are.
The next Scotland game would have been Jack’s third cap, as he was played out of position at right back in the friendly against the Netherlands last year.
Earlier this season against Belgium, the despicable Tartan Army abused his presence by booing the Rangers player when he was being introduced as a substitute, an embarrassing way to treat one of your own players.
Jack was forced to rule himself out of the squad less than 24 hours after being called up as a late replacement through an injury he picked up against Motherwell.
There are so many Scotland call offs with Aberdeen defender Michael Devlin almost certainly out of the ever diminishing squad through his unfortunate injury.
McLeish was forced to call up another four players at the weekend after Kevin McDonald, Charlie Mulgrew, Craig Gordon and Stephen O’Donnell also withdrew due to injuries.
