Newcastle United picked up just their second win of the season on Sunday afternoon, when they took care of Manchester United, and after the match their fans took to social media to react about the man who won them the game.
The Magpies have endured a tough start to the campaign, with their only previous victory coming away to Tottenham Hotspur, and as bad as the former champions have been recently, few would have expected Steve Bruce’s men to pick up three points in the St James’ Park contest.
To be fair, the clash was of pretty low quality, as you would expect given the struggles of the two sides to date, but no Newcastle fan will care about that having come out on the right end of it.
Bruce made a surprise before the match when he named academy product Matty Longstaff alongside his brother Sean in the heart of the Magpies midfield, and it is likely that not even he would have believed what was to happen having made that choice.
With the game not really going anywhere and heading into the last 20 minutes goalless, Newcastle embarked on a positive counter-attack and the ball broke to the Premier League debutant on the edge of the box, sitting perfectly for him to take aim and fire the Tyneside outfit to a famous victory.
It was the stuff dreams are made of for the academy product, and everyone inside St James’ Park of a Magpies disposition were clearly delighted for the youngster, who made the sort of impression that he hopes will see him included in the first-team more often.
It would appear the Newcastle fans would be happy with that, as Longstaff received plenty of praise for his performance on social media after the final whistle blew.
Here are some of those messages:
Great result, good solid performance and great atmosphere at the ground. Credit to Steve Bruce for his team selection. One terrific strike and one fine goal by Matty Longstaff. It feels fantastic to go into the International Break with a win and a thoroughly deserved win at that.

Actually made up for matty longstaff today, on his debut at 19 year old along side his brother with his family in the stands watching, in the biggest league in the world scoring at St James park in front of his home fans, what a moment, every boys dream come true isn’t it👌🏻⚽️

As a Geordie there is something truly brilliant about seeing the Longstaff brother play in midfield and get us the victory today. Tbf Bruce deserves significant credit for giving Matty the opportunity. Hopefully make the midfield their own for next 10 years #NUFC

I've said it before and I'll say it again….
We simply MUST build our midfield around Sean and Matty Longstaff.
They compliment each other perfectly and are both outstanding talents.
They could literally be our central midfield axis for the next 10-15 years.#NUFC

Probably one of the best home debuts I’ve seen in a long time today. Matty Longstaff is one of our own for sure! #NUFC
