Wolverhampton Wanderers were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday evening, and after the match their fans reacted to a costly error by goalkeeper Rui Patricio.
Wolves went into the contest as overwhelming favourites to come out on top, but they were actually indebted to an injury time strike from Willy Boly to rescue a point in the end.
Wanderers were on top in the early stages against Rafael Benitez’s outfit, but couldn’t force a breakthrough, and the match turned against them when Isaac Hayden opened the scoring for the visitors, in what was to be a moment to forget for Patricio.
The Portugal international sacrificed himself too early and had no answer to the shot aimed at him by the Magpies midfielder, letting the ball go past him from an effort which many would have expected him to save.
The goalkeeper’s blushed were saved late on, when his teammate Boly headed the ball home in the final minute of injury time to save a point for Wolves, and while it will be looked on as two points dropped overall, few can question the commitment, desire and character of the side, who seemingly don’t know when they have been beaten.
In fairness to Patricio, while he is guilty of the odd lapse in concentration and has one mistake too many in him, in the main he has been a huge player for Wanderers this season, making a number of saves and contributing heavily to a pretty decent defensive unit.
That has not stopped Wolves fans from showing concern over the quality of their stopper, with many fearing that he might have more costly errors in him between now and the end of the season.
A number of them reacted to his mistake, and his current level of play, when addressing his performance on social media after the match.
Here are some of their messages:
right we’ve all had our fun now, but why when ruddy makes a mistake it’s the end of the world but patricio also has a howler and nothing said? #wwfc

#WWFC 1-1 #NUFC
– needed to be more clinical tonight.
– midfield just didn’t get going
– Patricio’s kicking and communication HAS to improve. He was at fault for the goal.
– Adama is our best wideman
– We’re still 7th, no need to worry. We stay unbeaten which is the main thing

Wow! If you can't win it, don't lose it. I actually thought we were decent tonight. Patricio completely at fault for the goal otherwise Newcastle never looked like scoring. We had enough chances to put the game to bed. Very sloppy finishing nearly cost us #wwfc

Patricio worst minute of #wwfc career terrible kick, then abysmal ‘save’. Subs were weird but bloody hell you take the draw from there. Newcastle are so so negative. On another day one of those 14/1 corners go in and this is over . That’s the top 6 gone though lols #wwfc #wolves

In a game that’s always going to be tight… with first goal generally crucial. You don’t need your GK to drop a bollock… poor from Patrício ! #wwfc

Poor from Patricio. The John Ruddy Brigade will be out in force tonight. #WWFC
