Tottenham Hotspur were sent crashing out of the FA Cup on penalties by Norwich City on Wednesday evening, and after the match their fans reacted negatively to a recent signing.
Spurs went into the clash knowing it was one they had to win if they were going to pick up any silverware this season, but those hopes have been dashed after a disappointing display in which they failed to beat the bottom side in the Premier League in two hours of football.
Tottenham actually had the early lead in the contest, when Jan Vertonghen headed them in front before 15 minutes had made their way on to the clock, but a much changed side laboured from there onwards and ended up dry as a result.
Spurs went on to concede a late equaliser, and although Jose Mourinho gave in to the clamour from fans for him to try Troy Parrott out in the first team, they were unable to get any joy in the extra period.
That all led to the tie being settled on penalties and after both sides had missed, the Tottenham youngster stepped up for the penultimate spot kick and duly missed.
Worse was to follow when needing to score, Spurs’ January signing Gedson Fernandes failed to hit the target, with his side were bolted out of the competition and denied a quarter final spot against either Derby County or Manchester United.
That rounded off a pretty disappointing night for the Tottenham midfielder, who hasn’t really hit the heights that was expected of him when he arrived on loan earlier in the campaign.
That was not lost on a number of Spurs fans, who took to Twitter after the final penalty was missed to criticise the display they just witnessed from the highly-rated playmaker.
