West Ham United have confirmed on their official website that first-team pair Fabian Balbuena and Javier Hernandez are doubts for Thursday night’s Premier League clash against Southampton.
The Hammers are coming off a disappointing 2-0 home defeat against Watford and the travelling support will hope for a better performance and result at the St Mary’s Stadium.
However, Manuel Pellegrini may well have to mix up his selection, with West Ham possibly without Balbuena and Hernandez.
The Paraguayan defender has had a promising start to life in English football after his summer move from Corinthians but may well be rested for the game against Southampton as fixtures come thick and fast.
Balbuena was substituted in the first-half of the defeat to Watford and replaced by Angelo Ogbonna – the Italy international will hope to start the game on the south coast should his team-mate be unavailable.
Hernandez meanwhile lasted 75 minutes of the last game but picked up a knock and will need to be assessed closer to kick-off.
The West Ham site states that Lucas Perez could well be involved in the matchday squad if the Mexican is not fit enough to feature at Southampton.
All of the Hammers’ high-profile casualties remain sidelined, with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Andriy Yarmolenko and Manuel Lanzini nursing serious injuries.
West Ham sit 12th in the Premier League standings ahead of the game and will know that victory against the Saints will move the club back into the top half.
However, the visiting Londoners will be wary of Southampton’s new-found confidence, with the south coast outfit winning their last two games since Ralph Hasenhuttl’s arrival at the club.
