Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez will be missing three players when he takes his side to Merseyside, to face Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening.
The Magpies will be looking to bounce back from a shocking result at home to West Ham United on Saturday afternoon, with the Tyneside outfit sliding to a far too tame 3-0 defeat in front of their own fans.
That outcome was particularly surprising as Newcastle had gone into that contest with three successive victories to their name, but right from the beginning they just were not at the races against the classy Hammers.
That puts the Magpies under plenty of pressure on Wednesday, when they face an Everton side who will be reeling themselves after their agonising late defeat to rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
Benitez knows that it is important his Newcastle side has its key players available for these matches, but he is going to be missing three members of his squad for the trip.
The Magpies will be without the injured Paul Dummett, who remains out with the problem that has seen him miss the last two matches. Isaac Hayden and Karl Darlow are also unavailable, as the Spaniard confirmed in his press conference ahead of the match.
“Dummett is still not ready – getting better, but not ready.” The Newcastle official website quotes him as saying.
“(Isaac) Hayden also is not available, like (Karl) Darlow – they had the problem the last week. The other players are more or less – (Florian) Lejeune is training, (Jamie) Sterry is training, so everybody is training but we have two or three players who are not available and we have to make a decision later on about a couple of them.”
Winning at Goodison will not be easy and Newcastle have a less than inspiring record at the Merseyside venue. They have lost 10 of their last 14 visits, with just the one win in that time.
Magpies fans will be hoping that horrendous history can be put to one side on Wednesday, and that their team can claim a much needed victory.
