Southampton are interested in Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho as a summer transfer, according to The Mirror.

The 27-year-old, who is currently on loan at Crystal Palace, has been particularly impressive in recent weeks.

The Eagles are now four points clear of relegation having kept three clean sheets in a row with the help of Sakho, who featured in each of those games.

However, the London club do not have an option to buy the Frenchman in the loan agreement meaning Southampton will have the opportunity to make a deal with Liverpool.

Palace boss Sam Allardyce would prefer to keep the centre-back at Selhurst Park but it will be a challenging task as the Saints are prepared to offer £20 million for the France international.

The Hampshire-based club narrowly lost out to Manchester United in the League Cup final this season and will be looking to secure more talents in pursuit of silverware next year.

They host south coast rivals Bournemouth in the Premier League this weekend.
