Southampton are poised to sign Lazio centre-back Wesley Hoedt, according to the Italian club’s director, Igli Tare.
The Albanian has also wished the Dutchman well as he heads for the south coast.
“(Hoedt) will be handed over to Southampton shortly,” Tare was quoted as saying by Lazio Press.
“His time here has been positive and I wish him all the best.”
Southampton have been linked with Hoedt since last summer, and are now seemingly about to land their man.
With Virgil van Dijk having fallen out with the club as he agitates for a move away, the Saints have been left short of experience at the back.
Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida have started the season as Southampton’s first-choice centre-backs under new boss Mauricio Pellegrino.
And on the face of it, they have made a good start, following up a 0-0 draw with Swansea with a 3-2 win over West Ham United in the Premier League.
However, Southampton were somewhat fortunate to escape with a draw against the Welsh side, who created and spurned several chances while West Ham played the majority of Saturday’s game with 10 men.
With stiffer challenges on the horizon, Pellegrino wants to bolster his squad and is about to part with an estimated £15 million for Hoedt.
The Netherlands international signed for Lazio from AZ Alkmaar in 2015, but is no longer part of manager Simone Inzaghi’s plans.
He was only named as a substitute for their 0-0 Serie A draw with SPAL yesterday evening.
Capped four times by the Netherlands this year, he will bring with him international and European experience and Saints fans can expect to see him introduced to Pellegrino’s first team as quickly as possible.
Southampton travel to Yorkshire to take on Huddersfield Town in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday and if the deal is done quickly, Hoedt may well travel with them.
