Premier League side Southampton are looking to usurp Championship leaders Leeds United to the signing of Motherwell youngster Stuart McKinstry, according to the Scottish Sun.
The 16-year-old winger has been attracting plenty of attention north of the border, and some big clubs are eyeing up his signature before the transfer window shuts.
Leeds are believed to have invited the young star down to their training ground to run the rule over him, ahead of agreeing a move for the prodigious talent.
Marcelo Bielsa is looking to add numbers to his squad over the remainder of the month, to ensure he has enough options to get his side over the line in the race for promotion to the Premier League.
Leeds are said to have agreed a substantial package with Motherwell in order to sign the 16-year-old, but things could yet hit a snag for the Yorkshire outfit.
That is because Southampton have also had a bid accepted by the Scottish Premiership side, with the Premier League club looking to lure him to the St Mary’s Stadium.
Ralph Hasenhuttl is another manager who is looking to mould his squad in this transfer window, as he bids to lead the Saints away from danger in the top flight, and build a team that can take them further in the years to come.
McKinstry has been impressing for a while in the youth set up at Motherwell, and he was on the bench for the first time in a loss to Kilmarnock in December.
The youngster has already signed professional terms at Fir Park, and his current contract will run until 2020, which means whichever one of the two clubs that finally signs him, will have to pay a good deal of compensation for him.
Whether it is Southampton or Leeds that eventually gets their man, they will be getting one of the best young talents in Scottish football.
