Southampton fans were once again having to reflect on another home match without a win, when they saw their side surrender a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Brighton and Hove Albion at St Mary’s Stadium on Monday evening.
Everything was looking rosy for the Saints when a cracking strike from midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was added to by a Danny Ings penalty, but the Seagulls turned things around to such an extent that followers of the Hampshire club ended up disappointed once again.
For much of the night it looked like Mark Hughes’ men would pick up just a second home victory of 2018 in the Premier League, however as the match wore on Southampton got deeper and deeper and ultimately paid the price when Glenn Murray converted a late penalty, as the home side snatched defeat from the jaws of a certain win.
In what was actually a pretty poor contest between two average looking sides until the last 30 minutes, it was a thunderbolt from Denmark international Hojbjerg that offered the only piece of quality.
A weak clearance fell to him 30 yards from goal and after a great first touch, the midfielder looked up and rifled a terrific curling shot past Matthew Ryan in the Seagulls’ goal, to send the Saints on their way.
Hojbjerg continued to have a big influence on the match but he was unable to ensure his side left the pitch with all three points, due to the late collapse by the Hampshire outfit.
After the match he was scathing about events in various interviews, as his passion for winning shone through. That was not missed by the Southampton fans, who enjoyed his response, his performance and his wonder goal on what was a disappointing evening otherwise.
They reacted to events on social media after the final whistle went, with some even suggesting Hojbjerg would make a good captain.
Here are some of their messages:
PEH with an exceptional interview. Absolutely spot on in everything he said. Give him the armband #SaintsFC

What great passion from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. That's the type of interview you want to hear when you've not been good enough. #SaintsFC

As disappointed as I am about the final result, I am so happy to see Hojberg starting to play how we well know he can. I promise you, this season he will be one of our most important players in the squad #saintsfc

Same old story. We just can’t defend a lead. Could see if coming a mile off. Hojbjerg was immense. Onto Liverpool. #saintsfc
