Southampton are interested in signing Glasgow Rangers star Scott Arfield, according to a report published by The Daily Mail.
Since arriving at the Gers last summer from Burnley, the Canada international has reignited his career. He has been a key part of Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side this season and has gone on to make 42 appearances in competitions so far.
Reported Southampton target Arfield has also managed 11 goals and eight assists this season, which included a recent hat-trick against Motherwell.
The Rangers midfielder has established himself as a leader within Gerrard’s side this season and it would be a blow if the club were to lose him as they are currently in a stage where they need good leadership as they look to usurp arch-rivals Glasgow Celtic as the leaders when it comes to Scottish football.
The player is now 30-years-old and at this point of his career a move to the Premier League or even to a top-notch Championship club may not come again and could just be too good for him to turn down.
Southampton are currently battling relegation from the Championship. The report added that Rangers are likely to value Arfield at around £3 million.
This would present a bargain fee in today’s market for any club in the Premier League. It is also likely that the Saints would be able to afford this figure if they were relegated this season and they may even push harder for the signature of Arfield if they are relegated.
The Rangers man has vast experience in England after having played for Burnley between 2013-18. During that time Arfield went on to make 177 League appearances, scoring 21 goals.
