Newcastle United picked up a draw in their final away match of the Premier League season on Monday night when they held Brighton and Hove Albion to a 0-0 stalemate, and their fans were thankful to a star performer during and after the contest.
The Magpies have had an up and down campaign. They have done what they have needed to in order to preserve their top flight status, but it would be wrong to say they are finishing with a flourish.
The draw with Brighton was as drab a game of football as you could wish to see it is fair to say, although that won’t necessarily be too much of a concern to Newcastle boss Steve Bruce who added another point to his total as manager.
One reason why the Magpies were able to come away with that result at the Amex Stadium was down to their goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
To be fair to the Slovakian stopper, he wasn’t exactly overworked by the Seagulls attackers, but when he was called into action he was up to the challenge.
Dubravka has been one of the reasons why Newcastle will play Premier League football again next term, and he showed why in spells at the Amex, not least when he pulled off a fine save from home defender Adam Webster.
That served as another reminder to Magpies fans of how important the stopper is to them, not only in keeping them up this season, but also for their chances of remaining in the division in the years to come.
Many of those supporters took to social media to highlight how impressive their goalkeeper is, and to point out just how vital he has been to them throughout his time on Tyneside.
