Tottenham Hotspur are close to signing Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga as Mauricio Pochettino ramps up his recruitment efforts, according to Sky Sports.
Spurs announced on Friday that a deal had been agreed with Ajax for Davinson Sanchez to move to North London, with the Colombia international to become the club’s record signing if he passes a medical and gets a work permit.
Tottenham are also in the market for a goalkeeper, with Pau Lopez returning to Espanyol after a loan stint at the Premier League club last season.
Spurs were heavily linked with bringing the Spanish under-21 stopper back to the club on a permanent basis earlier this summer, but terms over a transfer seemingly could not be reached.
Gazzaniga moved to Southampton from the Valencia youth ranks, via Gillingham, but has had fleeting opportunities to play for the Saints in the Premier League in recent years.
The 25-year-old was at Southampton when Pochettino was the manager on the south coast and the Argentine pair now look set for a reunion at Tottenham.
Gazzaniga has found Fraser Forster as something of an immovable object in the Saints goal, with the South American only making 21 appearances for the club in the last five years.
Should a deal to move to Tottenham be completed, his opportunities to play are unlikely to improve.
Spurs club captain Hugo Lloris is an essential member of the team that finished second in the Premier League last season, while Michel Vorm is a Holland international and boasts plenty of experience.
However, with Lopez having left the club and a void for a third goalkeeper, Gazzaniga’s addition is a necessary acquisition as Tottenham look to add to their strength in depth for 2017-18.
