Sheffield Wednesday started the new Championship season in disappointing fashion on Saturday, with the promotion hopefuls beaten 1-0 by a modest Preston North End side at Deepdale.

The Owls have lofty ambitions of returning to the Premier League and came close to the feat last year after finishing fourth in the Championship table.

However, elimination at the hands of Huddersfield Town in the playoffs condemned the Hillsborough outfit to another season in English football’s second tier.

After splashing the cash to sign Jordan Rhodes permanently over the summer and George Boyd being added on a free transfer, the Wednesday fans have every reason to fill hopeful about the forthcoming campaign.

But, Carlos Carvalhal’s men were second best in the game against Preston, going down to a second-half Daniel Johnson penalty.

Wednesday failed to break down the hosts, ending the clash with just 35 per cent possession and barely a chance to test Chris Maxwell in the home side’s goal.

Pressure is already mounting on Carvalhal, with the Owls supporters taking to Twitter to express their disappointment at the result and belief that the manager has taken the club as far as he can.

Of the starting XI that took to the field at Deepdale, the Wednesday fans saved praise for forward Fernando Forestieri.

However, the fact that the 27-year-old was fielded as Rhodes’ partner in attack, rather than on the left-hand side of midfield, irked the majority of the supporters.

The Wednesday fanbase has called on Carvalhal to drop Adam Reach and reshuffle his forward line, with the Hillsborough side facing Chesterfield Town in the League Cup in midweek before Queens Park Rangers visit Sheffield next weekend.
