Shaqiri needs a fresh career change

Xherdan Shaqiri proved in the European Championships that he is still capable of churning out world-class and match-winning performances.

The 29-year-old played a crucial role in Switzerland’s surprise run to the quarter-finals of the competition.

He helped his nation claim a shock victory over France in the last 16 and they came close to reaching the semi-finals as they were eliminated on penalties by Spain in the quarter-finals.

If Shaqiri stays at Liverpool, he will be a fringe player and have to play second fiddle to the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

L’Equipe have reported that Lyon are keen on recruiting Shaqiri.

Liverpool want £12.75 million for the player and, with his contract running until the summer of 2023, they are unlikely to settle for anything less.

Lyon have felt the financial effects of the pandemic heavily, and their usually modest transfer kitty has been reduced even further.

Nevertheless, if a deal does go ahead, it will present Shaqiri with the chance to get regular playing time.

Lyon will be looking to fill the void created by Memphis Depay’s exit to Barcelona, and Shaqiri is a player who can certainly add quality to their frontline.

Whether Liverpool sell could also depend on whether they can recruit a new forward.

The Reds have had a fairly modest transfer window but have been linked with the signature of highly-rated Belgian youngster Jeremy Doku as per Voetbal24.
