Respected British pundit Jamie Carragher has backed Barcelona star Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d’Or ahead of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo this year.
The Argentina international is the current holder of the prestigious individual accolade and could win the award for a record-breaking sixth time in 2016.

However, there is an argument that Ronaldo should be crowned the world’s best player after leading Portugal to Euro 2016 glory and playing a role in Madrid winning the Champions League last term.
Despite this, Carragher has stated that Messi deserves to win the Ballon d’Or award due to the selfless nature of his play.
“One question has been persistent through the past few years and it has boiled down to this: Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo — whose camp are you in?” he wrote in The Daily Mail.
“There is the difference between Messi and Ronaldo — I make no secret whose camp I am in. It is Messi every single time.”
Messi is closing in on his 500th goal for Barcelona and is set to return to English shores this week as Barcelona face Manchester City in the Champions League.
Ronaldo netted a hat-trick in Madrid’s 4-1 win over Alaves on Saturday, which kept the capital city side on top of the La Liga table.
