Southampton could find themselves up against it in the race for David Okereke’s signature this summer, with Gianluca Di Marzio claiming Sassuolo are pressing ahead with their desire to sign him.
The Saints had been previously linked with a move for the Spezia forward and are even thought to have made an offer of €10million (£8.9m) plus €5m (£4.4m) in bonuses, as per Tuttomercatoweb.
However, the Serie A outfit are now said to be extremely keen on the Nigerian forward following an impressive campaign in Italy’s second tier.
Reported Southampton target Okereke netted 10 goals and provided his team-mates with 12 assists last season as he helped Spezia finish sixth.
The 21-year-old appears destined to have a bright future at the top level, however, whether it will be at Southampton looks rather doubtful at the moment following the interest from Sassuolo as he may be more open to the idea of remaining in the country than moving abroad and into the unknown.
Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl could certainly benefit from having a player of Okereke’s quality and potential at the St. Mary’s Stadium.
Whilst his goals and assist play are two qualities that would be highly desirable on the south coast, the fact that he is still a raw talent is something that would be extremely appealing to the Southampton manager.
The Nigerian forward is the type of player that the Austrian likes to have in his squad as he seems to favour bringing through young talent and helping to develop them to the best they can be.
Hasenhuttl was hugely successful during his time at Red Bull Leipzig when adopting that approach, whilst there has already been evidence of the same results during his short stint at Southampton.
Yan Valery is one such individual who has clearly benefitted from the manager’s arrival and looks to be an incredible talent moving forward.
