Tottenham Hotspur are fearing that Toby Alderweireld could leave the club on a free transfer next summer, according to a report published by The Mirror.
The Lilywhites were willing to listen to offers for the Belgian whose £25 million release clause expired two weeks ago.
Tottenham seemingly received no acceptable bids. Alderweireld has not agreed to a new contract with Spurs and his current situation means that he will be able to negotiate with foreign clubs from January over a possible free transfer next summer.
The potential loss of Alderweireld will be a major blow to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
The Tottenham player has been an important component of the club’s first team since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and went on to make 50 appearances in all competitions last season.
Alderweireld has however not won a major trophy with the club and this is something that is probably weighing on his mind.
At 30-years-old,the Tottenham enforcer likely has another 2-4 years of good football left in him and potentially one last major move before he eventually ends his career.
He is a quality defender and will likely attract attention from clubs that play in the Champions League, which could be tempting for him.
The only thing that could potentially convince Alderweirled to remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is if they win major silverware this season.
He has been a good servant to the club over the years and Spurs fans cannot really fault him if he does choose to leave, especially considering the career phase which he is currently at.
