Report: Man United outbid opponents for top-class South American, January addition possible

Reports from Chile have emerged stating that Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal could be on his way to Manchester United in the January transfer window.

United have outbid Inter Milan who were also interested in the Chilean, according to DIRECTV Chile reporter Herman Chanampa.

Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in desperate need of reinforcements in midfield with only three senior midfielders fit after injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

Vidal has made 20 appearances for Barcelona this season, scoring six goals – the most after the front three of Messi, Suarez and Griezmann.

He has been the only player with substantial goal contributions in a Barcelona midfield, which has failed to impress at times this season.

The 32-year-old has the same representatives as Alexis Sanchez and there is apparently a good relationship between his team and United.

Barcelona have a lot of options in midfield but none of the battling combative mould of Vidal.

The Blaugrana have already shipped youngster Carlos Alena off on loan while fellow La Masia graduate Riqui Puig has had limited opportunities for the first team.

Thus, there is pressure on Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde to make space for young talent by slowly phasing out the likes of Vidal and Ivan Rakitic, who are nearing the end of their careers.

Valverde admitted last month that a January departure was possible for the 32-year-old Vidal, who has been frustrated with the lack of game time at Camp Nou.

United can certainly do with a player of Vidal’s calibre in their midfield which has looked pedestrian in the absence of Pogba and more acutely, McTominay.
