Leeds United could be set to potentially make a move for Stoke City’s Ryan Woods this summer if they have to sell Kalvin Phillips, according to The Sun on Sunday (7/7; page 61).
The 23-year-old Phillips, who impressed in the Championship last season, has reportedly caught the interest of Aston Villa. He could be tempted to switch to the Villans as they will be playing in the Premier League next season.
Phillips was a first-team regular for Leeds last term as he went on to play 44 times in the second-tier, scoring one goal and recording three assists.
One of the impressive qualities about him is that he is versatile. Despite being a natural defensive midfielder, he was often required to play as a centre-back by the Whites last season and coped well.
Leeds will naturally want to keep hold of their star. He is the type of player that they need in their side if they want to secure a top two finish next season.
However, Phillips is not exactly very young in footballing terms and he may just be feeling that the time is now right for him to step up and play at the highest level.
Woods went on to make 27 appearances for Stoke last season. He was one of the Potters’ better players as they were largely underwhelming by their standards.
The 25-year-old could arguably do better at Elland Road though it must be noted that he is not as naturally gifted as Phillips.
Leeds must try to keep hold of Phillips but if he does depart, Woods would not be the worst replacement.
