Report: Key Aston Villa man an outside chance to return for Carabao Cup final

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith gives an injury update ahead of their Carabao Cup final.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith will make a late decision on John McGinn ahead of their Carabao Cup final on Sunday, according to Birmingham Live.

The Villans head to Wembley at the weekend in search of their first domestic trophy since 1996, but are missing a number of key players.

None is more influential than midfielder McGinn, as the Villa star has been sidelined since picking up an ankle injury in December.

The Scotland international had been one of the Premier League’s form players prior to his injury, and the loss of the midfielder has seen the Villans slip to within a point of the relegation zone.

McGinn has started light training over the weekend ahead of the Carabao Cup final, and a decision on his fitness will be made closer to Sunday’s huge clash.

The 25-year-old has registered three goals and two assists in the Premier League this season, and is an integral part of the Villa squad.

Smith would welcome the return of McGinn on Sunday as they aim to defeat current Carabao Cup holders Manchester City.

Villa forward Keinan Davis also has a chance of returning to fitness for the final, as the 22-year-old is back in full training after a number of injury setbacks of late.

The attacker’s latest problem came during an under-23s fixture against West Brom at the start of the month, and despite picking up a hamstring injury on that day he is confident of returning on Sunday.

While Davis may feature for Villa, Tom Heaton and Wesley have been ruled out for the rest of the season and John Steer will play no part at Wembley.

Smith will be hoping his men can pull of a shock cup final victory, before returning to league action and attempting to secure their top-flight status beyond the current season.
