Everton could be set to release goalkeeper Maarten Stelekenburg at the end of the season, according to a report which was published by The Liverpool Echo.
The report added that other Toffees players who could be set to be released by the Merseyside outfit include Leighton Baines, Oumar Niasse and Cuco Martina.
The latter duo may be pushed out of the club during the January transfer window if Everton manage to find a club that will take them on.
Stekelenburg is currently a cover option to Jordan Pickford.
His name is the most surprising on the list. While he has not played a Premier League game so far this season, he has made two competitive appearances in the League Cup and looked solid.
Everton did sign Jonas Lossl from Huddersfield Town last summer and it now appears that they prefer the Dane as their alternative option in goal.
Hence, it would not make sense for the Toffees to keep the 37-year-old on their books.
Stekelenburg joined Everton back in 2016 after leaving Fulham. The former Netherlands first-choice goalkeeper started off his time at Goodison Park as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper but eventually lost his place to Joel Robles.
The Dutchman was retained as the Goodison Park club’s cover option after Robles left the club following the arrival of Pickford.
The 58-times capped Netherlands international is still capable of playing at the highest level and perhaps does have one last career move in him as a professional footballer.
It would make sense for him to leave Everton and move to a less physically demanding league at this point in time.
