According to The Chronicle, Sunderland are interested in signing Marcus Maddison from League One rivals Peterborough United in the January transfer window.
It has been reported that Sunderland will monitor the situation of the 26-year-old – who can operate as a winger or as an attacking midfielder – closely.
The report has claimed that the former Newcastle United prospect has a release clause of £2.5 million.
According to the report, Sunderland may make a move for Maddison in the January transfer window if Peterborough lower their asking price, or they can wait until the summer to secure the services of the Englishman on a free transfer.
Good signing for Sunderland?
Maddison is one of the best attackers in League One and is a proven goalscorer, as well as a player who can create chances for his teammates.
With Sunderland aiming to clinch promotion to the Championship at the end of the season, the 26-year-old would be a brilliant signing for the Black Cats in the middle of the season and will make them a lot stronger for the second half of the campaign.
According to WhoScored, Maddison has scored six goals and provided six assists in 12 League One appearances for Peterborough so far this season.
