Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier missed out on Sunday’s 4-1 Premier League pummelling of Liverpool at the Wembley Stadium due to illness, a reliable journalist has stated.

A brace either side of half time courtesy of in form talisman Harry Kane, and goals from Son Heung-min and Dele Alli in the opening 45 minutes, was enough to see off the rather shoddy Reds, who put up little fight in attempt to get back into the match.

However, the 23-year-old midfielder was only fit enough to make a nine-minute cameo appearance, with the clash being well over as a contest by that point, after falling ill just 48 hours before kick off.

According to ESPN and Yahoo Sport journalist Ben Pearce, it was thought Dier was suffering from the same bout of lurgy as teammate Ben Davies, who missed three Spurs games after being sidelined for 12 days.

“Eric Dier fell ill on Friday (presumably the Davies lurgy) and is only fit enough for the bench”, the Lilywhites writer posted on his official Twitter account.

The Wales international also started alongside the Tottenham enforcer on the substitutes’ bench, but was left unused as Mauricio Pochettino’s side continued to steamroll up the league.

The Argentine, however, will be hopeful his defensive-minded ball-winner does not suffer the same extended period out of action to that of the left-back, especially considering the trip to Manchester United and the visit of Real Madrid following shortly after entertaining West Ham United on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

The former Sporting Lisbon academy graduate, who spent 12 months on loan at Everton in 2011, played an imperative role during Spurs’ well-deserved draw inside the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium is his less-favoured centre-back position.

Pochettino will be hoping once again he can rely on his man when Los Blancos visit Wembley in just over one week’s time, where another heroic performance will be required if the north Londoners are to remain top of their group.
